Other states should follow in Selangor’s education-first footsteps

HULU LANGAT, Oct 7 — Selangor’s outstanding drive to prioritise education with various initiatives should be emulated by other states, said Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.

She said the Selangor People’s Tutoring Programme (PTRS) is an effective undertaking as it boosted the state’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia 2023 average grade.

“The success of the PTRS is due to it being an ecosystem built not only for education, but for the academic system as a whole.

“The intervention under this programme is not one way, but involves teacher development, student welfare, parental involvement, and student growth, which we hope can be synergised in the context of the development of children’s potential,” she said.

Earlier, she officiated the Education Reformation Commitment Programme here, which was attended by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

Fadhlina, in her speech, said Selangor’s success should be exemplified, and the state’s practices shared, to benefit the younger generation.

“The SPM results shows Selangor’s massive leap (in improvement), which would not have happened without the commitment and earnestness of frontliners, especially teachers and other ecosystems, which backed this success, as did the PTRS.

“Selangor also leads in the school sports field. For 22 years, no other state has emerged champion in the Malaysia School Sports Council event,” she said.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said Selangor is consistent in its stance that education must be a basic foundation to the development of state and nation.

“To ensure Selangor’s economy continues as a strong foundation and remains sustainable as an economic power in the country, education is the bedrock that cannot be forgotten,” he said.

Besides the PTRS, among other Selangor initiatives to empower education include the Kita Selangor book e-voucher plan for university students, which has benefited 1,000 students with an overall allocation of RM200,000.

Other than that, the Selangor Technical Development Centre offers various quality skills training programmes, towards Industrial Revolution 4.0.
