State ready to contribute 30 pct to National Semiconductor Strategy

By Danial Dzulkifly

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4 – Selangor is set to contribute up to 30 per cent towards the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS), aiming to generate RM100 billion annually from the electrical and electronics (E&E) industry, including exports, said state executive councillor for investment, trade, and mobility Ng Sze Han.

Ng said the Selangor government is committed to bolstering the semiconductor and E&E ecosystems in the Klang Valley via strategic partnerships and supportive policies, in line with NSS objectives.

“I am proud to announce that the Selangor government, together with Sidec (Selangor Information Technology and Digital Economy Corporation), is playing a pivotal role in Malaysia’s semiconductor sector. Selangor is ready to contribute 30 per cent of the NSS target, helping generate RM100 billion in semiconductor and E&E exports annually,” he said in his opening speech at the Malaysia Semiconductor Recruitment Day, held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre here today.

Ng further said the first phase of the NSS seeks to secure RM500 billion in investments over the next several years, including foreign direct investments, with Selangor already witnessing a substantial influx of semiconductor companies from China, Japan, Korea, India, Taiwan, and the United States.

“The NSS has set ambitious targets to reshape Malaysia’s semiconductor landscape, including establishing 10 integrated circuit (IC) design and advanced packaging companies, each generating over RM1 billion in revenue.

“The strategy also aims to create 100 semiconductor supply chain companies, each with revenues exceeding RM1 billion,” he added.

Ng said the Klang Valley Semiconductor Corridor is expected to contribute around 40 IC and test packaging companies, aligning with Selangor’s goal of contributing 30 per cent to the NSS.

Today’s event is the inaugural Malaysia Semiconductor Recruitment Day, hosted by Sidec.

The event attracted over 2,000 students from 20 universities across Malaysia, seeking job opportunities with 25 semiconductor companies.

The job offers span various skill sets, with engineering roles in high demand, offering salaries between RM5,000 and RM6,000.

Ng also emphasised that the participation of semiconductor companies in the event reflects the sector’s growing interest and recognition of its importance to Malaysia’s economic future.

“The NSS also focuses on talent development, with a goal to train 60,000 semiconductor professionals. This includes plans by the Malaysia IC Design Park and the Advanced Semicon Academy to train over 5,000 IC engineers, along with more than 15,000 specialists in high-growth areas such as advanced test and packaging.

“Through initiatives like today’s event, we are building a solid talent pipeline that will drive Malaysia’s success in the coming decades,” he said.
