CAIRO, Nov 10 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived in Egypt today for a four-day official visit at the invitation of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
The special flight carrying Anwar and his delegation landed at Cairo International Airport at 6.30pm local time. The Prime Minister was received by Egypt Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly, Malaysian Ambassador to Egypt Datuk Mohd Tarid Sufian, and other officials.
At the Presidential Arrival Hall, Anwar inspected the 16-member Static Guard of Honour.
Among those accompanying the Prime Minister on this visit are Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, Deputy Natural Resources and Environment Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii.
Today, the Prime Minister is set to receive an official welcome at the Al-Ittihadiya Palace before a private meeting with El-Sisi, followed by a bilateral discussion between the two leaders.
Both Anwar and El-Sisi will then witness the signing of memorandums of understanding, including one between Malaysia and Al-Azhar Al-Sharif’s Faculty of Islamic Studies, and one on Malaysia-Egypt religious affairs cooperation.
In the afternoon, Anwar will deliver a public lecture at Al-Azhar University, followed by a roundtable discussion with Egyptian industry leaders.
Egypt was Malaysia’s fifth-largest trading partner among African nations last year, with bilateral trade valued at RM3.35 billion.
From January to September this year, bilateral trade between the two countries reached RM3 billion, marking a 21.4 per cent increase from the same period in 2023. This year’s trade value is expected to surpass last year’s figures.
