SHAH ALAM, Nov 30 — The recent floods in Klang were caused by continuous rainfall and the ongoing phenomenon of high tides, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
He urged residents in high-risk areas to remain vigilant and comply with evacuation orders as another high tide is expected.
“It is expected that the high tide will occur again tonight, and residents in at-risk areas are advised to stay alert, follow the latest announcements, and adhere to evacuation orders if necessary.
“All agencies involved in flood and disaster management are on standby to ensure the safety of residents and the smooth operation of relief efforts,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday night.
Earlier, Amirudin visited flood victims at a temporary relief centre (PPS) in SK Sungai Binjai, Meru, accompanied by Meru state assemblyman Mariam Abdul Rashid.
Meanwhile, the Menteri Besar has also directed the state’s Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) to expedite four retention pond projects aimed at reducing flood risks in the affected areas.
A retention pond in Alam Budiman is expected to be completed by the end of this year, while the others are in the final design and approval stages.
“Flooding in Meru has persisted for 15 years, and this is the second occurrence this year. We have four projects planned, and I have instructed JPS to complete them promptly,” he said.
According to the Social Welfare Department’s Info Bencana app, two PPS have been opened in Selangor: one at SK Sungai Binjai and another at MPKK Bukit Kapar, housing 487 victims from 111 families.
