Northeast monsoon: Dam water to be released in stages to avoid overflow

By Fitri Hazim Hazam

KUALA SELANGOR, Nov 9 — The release of water from Selangor’s dams is being carried out in stages as a preparation for the Northeast Monsoon season, said state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Izham Hashim.

The measure to reduce water storage capacity has had a positive impact, implemented by the Selangor Water Management Authority since August.

“We release it in stages, typically at a rate of 10 per cent. For instance, if the capacity reaches 100 per cent, we reduce it to 90 per cent to accommodate rainwater.

“At this 10 per cent rate, we also release it in stages to manage and avoid overwhelming river flow. Thankfully, the dams have not encountered issues so far,” he said.

Izham was speaking to the press after officiating the handover ceremony of the Raw Water Guarantee Scheme’s Package B at Kolam Hang Tuah Pond 5 along Jalan Rantau Panjang in Bestari Jaya yesterday.

When asked about monitoring the function of water pumps in Sri Muda, he said the Shah Alam City Council and the Irrigation and Drainage Department are currently upgrading drains and drainage systems to prepare for possible flooding in the area.

“Tenaga Nasional Berhad is also in the process of providing electrical utilities to ensure smooth operation.

“The water pumps are functioning well following the addition of three screw units, which can discharge five times the floodwater,” Izham said.
