SUBANG JAYA, Nov 4 — There are now over 900 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the state, in line with the Selangor government’s aim to provide 1,000 such facilities by year-end.
State executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han expressed confidence that more EV charging stations will be installed with the uptrend in EV usage.
“There are around 25,000 EVs on Malaysian roads, for a ratio of 41 vehicles per charging station, compared with EV producers such as the United States which has a 20:1 ratio and China, which has a 25:1 ratio. We still have room to improve.
“I hope many more EV charging stations can be installed statewide soonest, in line with the state government’s aim to reduce pollution,” he said at a launch of the Carput Zap Electric Vehicle Charging Station at Kinrara Golf Club, Puchong, which was also attended by state executive councillor for rural development and unity Datuk Rizam Ismail.
Ng expressed confidence that demand for charging stations will expand after Perodua and Proton release their EV models at the end of the year.
“At year-end, more affordable and comfortable Proton and Perodua (EVs) will be launched, so demand for charging stations will of course rise after that,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ng said the state government will work with China EV suppliers to build a right-hand drive (RHD) research facility.
“We are in the discussion stage … There are suggestions to work with EV suppliers in China as the country is the world’s largest EV supplier.
“We hope it can be realised, to make Selangor an RHD research and development centre,” he added.
