SHAH ALAM, Nov 19 — The Selangor People’s Tuition Programme (PTRS) has been instrumental in helping students achieve better results in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said the free tuition initiative has produced positive outcomes, as reflected by the improvement in the State’s Average Grade (GPN), which recorded 4.67 compared to 4.80 in 2022.
“PTRS’ success is measured through two key indicators: the GPN and the rising pass rate. The reduction in GPN signifies improvement.
“In addition, the overall pass rate in 2023 reached 91.14 per cent, with 58,082 students achieving passing grades, compared to 89.25 per cent the previous year,” Amirudin said.
He was responding to Bukit Lanjan state assemblyman Pua Pei Ling’s query during the State Legislative Assembly session today.
Amirudin added that 130,000 Form Four and Form Five students benefited from the programme this year.
The programme, which provides guidance in subjects including Malay, English, Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Science, and History, will continue next year with the same number of students.
“Additionally, PTRS will be expanded to primary schools next year to assist young pupils in mastering basic literacy and numeracy skills (3Rs), targeting 20,000 students,” he said.
PTRS offers supplementary classes for students from low-income families whose academic performance is average or weak.
During the 2025 Selangor Budget presentation on Friday (November 15), the Menteri Besar announced a RM10 million allocation to implement PTRS in the upcoming year.
