KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 — Police are investigating an incident involving a third-year Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) student suspected of being stomped on.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the 19-year-old victim suffered fractures to his ribs and spine and is being treated in hospital.
He said the investigation revealed the incident occurred at 10:45pm on October 21 after roll call near the university campus’ marching grounds, but police only received a report on the incident at 8.40pm on Friday.
“The case is still at the investigation stage and police have advised the public not to make speculations until the probe is completed,” he said in a statement today, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 325 of the Penal Code.
The incident went viral on X when a woman claimed her brother was stomped on until his ribs were fractured in an alleged bullying incident.
Meanwhile, the Defence Ministry (Mindef) has handed over the investigation to police, with minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin posting on X that his office views the incident as inappropriate and damaging to UPNM and other universities’ image.
“Following the police report made, Mindef leaves this matter to the Royal Malaysian Police to complete their investigation.
“We will give full cooperation and attention in this matter,” he assured.
On Thursday, Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari said Mindef would introduce measures to curb bullying among UPNM students.
