KLANG, Dec 2 — Klang’s economic growth is set to accelerate with the implementation of the Speed Selangor Policy, an initiative aimed at simplifying approval processes for new industries, said its newly-minted mayor Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain.
The policy, which significantly reduces the approval period for planning permissions, among other things, is expected to attract more investors and drive the municipality’s development.
“To ensure Klang continues to thrive, I will engage with key stakeholders, particularly housing, industrial, and commercial developers, to create a positive impact for the nation.
“Klang has the advantage of hosting a port and industrial zones, which help boost the country’s economy. In this regard, departments and agencies play a crucial role in evaluating and approving applications under the Speed Selangor Policy,” he said.
Hamid was speaking after his swearing-in ceremony as the new Klang Mayor at Dewan Mesyuarat Raja Mahadi in the Klang Royal City Council’s (MBDK) headquarters today.
The Speed Selangor Policy, introduced during the tabling of the 2025 Selangor Budget, aims to reduce the approval period for planning permits in designated industrial areas from 3.5 months to just 14 days.
During the state budget’s tabling on November 15, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the policy is part of the state government’s agenda to facilitate business processes. It is expected to be implemented by April next year.
Hamid, 57, succeeds Datin Paduka Noraini Roslan, who retired last month.
He brings extensive experience, having served as Sepang Municipal Council president since 2020 prior to this appointment, and as acting Ampang Jaya Municipal Council president previously.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Hamid signed his appointment letter in the presence of his deputy Mohd Zary Affendi Mohd Arif and local councillors.
In his first press conference as mayor, he acknowledged the unique challenges of managing Klang, a historic city with a mix of old and new developments.
“I understand Klang is a 100-year-old city with a mix of old and new developments. Naturally, upgrading older areas poses more challenges compared to newer ones.
“For the community’s well being, MBDK will ensure proper maintenance across all areas. I will also strive to improve infrastructure, including community halls and recreational parks,” Hamid said.
He stressed the importance of collaboration among councillors and staff, urging them to enhance community engagement programs.
“With the commitment of councillors, we can better understand residents’ problems and take appropriate action,” Hamid said.
