Israel involved in ‘grave breach’ of Syria’s sovereignty, says Pakistan

NEW DELHI, Dec 13 — Pakistan has yesterday called the Israeli regime’s attacks and land grab in Syria as a “grave breach” of Syrian sovereignty.

The Israeli military has advanced towards the capital, Damascus, after crossing a buffer zone with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights since the Assad regime’s fall on December 8.

Turkiye, Iran, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have raised alarm over the latest Israeli provocations, which include attacks on Syrian airfields, naval vessels and military facilities.

“Pakistan is deeply concerned at Israeli aggression against Syria, its illegal seizure of Syrian territory and widespread destruction of Syrian infrastructure and civilian and military installations. This assault on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria is a grave breach of international law,” Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said at a media briefing telecast live from Islamabad yesterday.

“We express support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and reject Israeli acquisition of territory by force,” she said.

Baloch said Pakistan reaffirms its support for the UN Security Council Resolution 497, which declared Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights as “null and void and without international legal effect”.

In response to a question about Syria’s government transition, she said Pakistan supports an inclusive political process and “any solutions to the situation” should match the people’s aspirations.

“It is the right of the people of Syria to determine their own future and make decisions about their destiny,” the spokeswoman said.
