PETALING JAYA, Dec 13 — The state government has allocated over RM6 million to upgrade the drainage system at Sungai Kayu Ara to reduce the risk of flash floods around Kampung Cempaka here since 2021.
State executive councillor for public health and the environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the project, which began on April 6, 2022, involved the construction of a 0.4-hectare retention pond, a retaining wall, slope protection spanning one metre, and gabions (stone cages).
Completed by the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) on November 8 this year, it also aims to address soil erosion issues and strengthen the river’s structure.
“The retention pond can hold up to 48,000 cubic metres of rainwater. (This initiative) is to ensure the safety and well-being of residents here.
“(Previously), the worst flood occurred in 2021, with water rising as high as five to six feet, affecting 90 families in Kampung Cempaka,” she said after officiating the project today.
Jamaliah, who is also the Bandar Utama state assemblywoman, said Selangor is committed to continuing flood prevention projects downstream, including the area from PJU 1/4 to Jalan Emas 1 in the district.
Meanwhile, Petaling District JPS Engineer Mohd Shahril Mohd said the project at PJU 1/4 to Jalan Emas, which began in June, has now reached 10 per cent progress.
“The project focuses on widening Sungai Ara to increase water capacity, including the installation of a screw pump to channel rainwater from land to the river.
“In addition, a 1.5-kilometre-long wall will also be built, and the project is expected to be completed by June 2026 as scheduled,” he said.
