MOSCOW, Jan 22 — There will be no winners in the tariff war between China and the United States (US), and Washington must respect international trade rules and create an environment for bilateral cooperation, said Chinese Embassy in the United States’ spokesperson Liu Pengyu to Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
US President Donald Trump previously raised the possibility of introducing new tariffs against China from February 1 onwards over smuggling of the synthetic opioid fentanyl, which is allegedly sent from China to Mexico and Canada. Trump also threatened two other countries with tariffs.
“Regarding the issue of the US imposing additional tariffs on China, China believes that the essence of China-US economic and trade cooperation is mutual benefit and win-win, and there are no winners in trade wars and tariff wars.
“The US should earnestly respect the principles of market economy and international trade rules and create a good environment for China-US economic and trade cooperation,” he said.
Liu added that China is strict in combating drugs and has supported Washington in solving fentanyl-related issues, noting that China’s actions have helped in the fight against fentanyl in the US.
“China is willing to continue to carry out drug control cooperation with the United States based on equality, mutual benefit, and mutual respect.
“The United States should cherish China’s goodwill and maintain the hard-won good situation of China-US drug control cooperation,” he said.
