Johor fully recovers from floods

JOHOR BAHRU, Jan 16 — The flood situation in Johor has fully recovered, with the last three temporary relief centres (PPS) in the state now closed.

State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) chairman Tan Sri Azmi Rohani said the three PPS — SK Melayu Raya in Pontian, and Dewan Serbaguna Kahang as well as SJK(C) Kahang in Kluang — have been closed.

“All 230 evacuees, from 72 families, who were accommodated in these centres, have been allowed to return to their homes today, following the receding floodwaters and confirmation that the situation in the affected residential areas is safe.

“The weather forecast for Pontian predicts rain, while Muar is expected to be cloudy, with the other eight districts set to experience sunny conditions,” he said in a statement.

On January 10, Johor was once again struck by floods, in the districts of Kota Tinggi, Pontian, Kluang, Kulai, and Johor Bahru, caused by continuous heavy rain.

Meanwhile, in Ipoh, Perak, flooding in several areas of the Manjung district has also fully recovered, with the last remaining PPS closing at 2pm today.

The Perak JPBN Secretariat announced that all 31 evacuees from nine families, who had been sheltered at SAR Padang Serai in Beruas, were allowed to return home.

“Monitoring by the authorities and relevant parties confirmed that the situation at the disaster sites is now safe, and all flood victims have been cleared to return to their residences,” it said in a statement

Perak JPBN also extended its deepest appreciation and gratitude to all state and Federal government agencies, individuals, and NGOs for their support and coordination in managing the PPS operations.
