Keretapi Sarong wins best Asean cultural preservation award

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 21 — The iconic annual event, Keretapi Sarong, has been honoured with the prestigious Best Asean Cultural Preservation Effort 2025 award by the Asean Tourism Association (Aseanta). The award was presented during the Asean Tourism Forum 2025 in Johor Bahru yesterday.

Keretapi Sarong Director and Locco Co-Founder, Shamsul Bahrin Zainuzzaman, said the recognition is a testament to the collective spirit and love of Malaysians for cultural heritage.

“Keretapi Sarong is not just an event; it is a platform where tradition meets modernity, fostering unity and pride among Malaysians.

“Preserving culture is not just about remembering the past but ensuring that future generations inherit a rich and meaningful legacy they can take pride in,” he said in a statement today.

He added that the award underscores the event’s significance in preserving traditional customs while innovatively modernising the way cultural narratives are shared and celebrated.

“Locco’s unwavering commitment to organising this event every Malaysia Day has made it close to the hearts of Malaysians and Asean observers. Locco’s unique approach to hosting Keretapi Sarong has turned it into a celebration of togetherness.

“We are grateful to all local communities, cultural groups, and brands that have trusted and supported us. Without their support and dedication, Keretapi Sarong would not be what it is today — a vibrant celebration that fosters pride in our culture,” he said.

The Keretapi Sarong programme is held annually in conjunction with Malaysia Day, symbolising unity and drawing thousands of participants clad in traditional sarong attire to explore the country together by train.

Organised by Locco, a cultural platform dedicated to celebrating Malaysia’s heritage, Keretapi Sarong successfully connects communities, promotes inclusivity, and showcases the beauty of Malaysian culture to the world.
