MBPJ ready to host 2026 Para Sukma events, says mayor

PETALING JAYA, Jan 25 — The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) said it is prepared to host 2026 Para Malaysian Games (Sukma) events at its facilities.

Selangor will host the 2026 Para Sukma in August next year.

On Monday, state executive councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi announced that MBPJ Stadium is being considered as a venue for the Para Sukma 2026 opening and closing ceremonies.

Petaling Jaya Mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon said the decision to hold the opening and closing ceremonies at the stadium is in the initial stages, and a technical committee is working to prepare the venue.

“MBPJ venues are involved in events including men’s hockey, squash, rugby, tennis, and football, with the opening and closing ceremonies of Para Sukma planned to be held at MBPJ Stadium.

“However, the technical committee will inspect these venues to determine their readiness, as some areas require repairs,” he said when met after chairing the MBPJ board meeting at the council headquarters here yesterday.

Zahri said the state government has allocated funds to repair and upgrade the facilities.

“We already have the venues, but the state government has requested we address minor damage, such as pipe repairs, under our purview as the local authority. Major funding will come from either the state or federal government,” he added.

Najwan, who heads the 2026 Selangor Sukma and Para Sukma Implementing Committee, recently revealed the committee is considering the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) as a venue for the opening and closing ceremonies for Sukma 2026.

SIC chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif welcomed the suggestion, and said initial discussions with the Selangor government and Sukma secretariat have been held.
