State to close loopholes to combat land title fraud — MB

By Danial Dzulkifly

BATANG KALI, Jan 23 — The Selangor government plans to tighten its land administration system following recent cases of land title fraud uncovered through police investigations.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari described the findings and subsequent arrests of several state civil servants over the issue as “the tip of the iceberg”.

He revealed the state has suffered large losses due to exploitation of its land management system, particularly during its transition to the more secure e-Tanah system.

“The state government has incurred significant losses, largely due to overlapping land claims, which have forced us to replace land and pay compensation to affected parties.

“Some of these plots of land were involved in business transactions, and I firmly believe such issues must be addressed. This is merely the tip of the iceberg, and we must identify areas for improvement and rectify past errors,’’ he told reporters after launching the Batang Kali small hydropower plant here today.

Amirudin explained that during the transition to the e-Tanah system, certain parties took advantage of the situation by manipulating records to include names and ownerships that should not have been entered.

“Now, with the e-Tanah system in place, our controls are far stricter than before,” he said, urging both the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to carry out a thorough investigation on the matter.

Amirudin’s statement comes after reports of illegal land transfer activities involving staff at the Klang Land and District Office.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said 17 people, including land office staff, have been detained since November.

On Tuesday, Selangor Land and Mines Office (PTGS) director Datuk Yusri Zakariah confirmed that seven employees from PTGS Klang had been arrested by police to assist in investigations into illegal land transfers.

They have also been transferred to the Human Resources Department at the Selangor State Secretariat in Shah Alam, pending a full probe by Bukit Aman, and are not allowed to handle any land-related matters.
