MB: SIBS can propel Southeast Asia’s role in advancing Asia’s economy

By Yasmin Ramlan

PETALING JAYA, June 25 — Southeast Asia has the potential to elevate Asia’s economy to become the world’s leading continent in the near future.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the organisation of global events like the Selangor International Business Summit (SIBS), which showcases exhibitors from the Southeast Asian region, can help realise this ambitious goal.

“There is no better place to set up shop or expand your business today than Southeast Asia.

“I truly believe that if we take the right steps, make the right moves, and invest in the right strategic areas, Southeast Asia can skyrocket Asia’s economy into the world’s most advanced continent.

“The Asian Century is no longer just talk. We are, and must be, prepared to walk the talk,” he said in a pre-recorded video broadcast during the official launch of SIBS 2024 at the Sheraton Hotel today.

The Asian Century refers to the dominant role that Asian nations are expected to play in the 21st century due largely to their fast-growing economies.

For the first time, SIBS will be held on two separate occasions this year, respectively from July 25 to July 27 and October 16 to October 19, with the ultimate goal of expanding its reach.

State executive councillor for investment, trade, and mobility Ng Sze Han said the July edition would feature the 8th Selangor Asean Business Conference (SABC) and the 4th Selangor Investment and Industrial Park Expo (SPARK).

Meanwhile, the October series will focus on three main events: the 10th SIE (F&B), the 4th Selangor Life Sciences Convention (SLC), and the 9th Selangor Smart City and Digital Economy Convention (SDEC).

“This year, we are excited to announce several key speakers who have confirmed their attendance, including the Selangor Menteri Besar (Amirudin), Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow; Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, as well as senior representatives from business chambers from Asean member countries.

“And for the first time, SABC will also feature a speaker from Timor-Leste, who will introduce the country and its potential investment opportunities,” he said when delivering his speech at today’s event.

Invest Selangor Bhd is targeting RM7 billion in potential transaction value for this year’s SIBS and anticipates over 60,000 visitors from 80 countries.
