GOMBAK, SEP 11: Recognition and incentives from the state government await Selangor Paralympic athlete Muhamad Ziyad Zolkefli after his sterling gold medal winning performance at the Rio Paralympics in Brazil.
Dato’ Menteri Besar, Dato’ Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said the appreciation shown is to honour the Gombak athlete’s sacrifice and effort.
“His achievement not only makes Selangor citizens proud, but is celebrated by the entire nation.
“To honour this athlete, I will be announcing an incentive to reward athletes who truly do their best to bring glory to Malaysia and Selangor at the international level,” he said.
He said this at the #QuranHour programme at the Malaysian International Islamic University’s Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Mosque.
Muhamad Ziyad, a shot putt athlete, successfully broke the world record held by Todd Hodgetts from Australia with a throw of 16.84m, erasing the old record of 16.29m set at the London Paralympics.
His success made him the nation’s second gold medallist after T36 100m athlete Mohamad ridzuan Mohamad Puzi made history by winning Malaysia’s first Paralympics gold medal earlier today.
Mohamed Azmin said that the state government will continue to support all efforts by athletes to achieve success at the international level.
This includes long term programmes, sports education and the establishment of a pioneer squad to create more professional athletes.
