New approach to help youth appreciate history

BY: SYASYA SUFIAN
SHAH ALAM, SEP 12: Malaysian youth should be given a different approach in learning and appreciating Malaysian history in accordance with the changing times.
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Academic Heritage Museum Director Dr Mohd Shamsudin said that the current generation of youth actually do value the country’s independence but they do not know how to express their deep love towards their country.
“We need to begin a new approach so that history becomes more interesting and easy for them to understand because youths are not rejecting history but they are unable to experience it closely.

“Cooperation between the government, non-governmental organisations, universities and schools need to provide a new approach and method for youths to learn history in line with the development of new technology,” he said.
Dr Mohd Shamsudin, who is also Foreign Policy Studies and the History of Modern Malaysia lecturer in UKM, said this during a press conference after the PPAS Independence Memory Programme and the ‘Persekutuan Malaysia 1961-1966: Penubuhan dan Cabaran’ book launch at the PPAS Auditorium on September 9.
He said that youths strengthen their character and become better citizens when they are able to appreciate history.
“The things that can be implemented include dialogue sessions, forums and lectures but these should be organised by youths themselves in their own way using the latest technology and creative ideas.
“It is unfair to say that youths are blind towards history because many of my students in science and engineering fields get good grades in history papers and I am sure that in their hearts, there is love for their country,” he said.
