SHAH ALAM, Jan 10 — The Cabinet has agreed on Wednesday that Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will serve as the acting education minister.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the Cabinet also decided that Dr Mahathir will only assume the position “temporarily”.

“The decision would take effect on January 3, 2020 and Mahathir will assume the position until a new education minister is appointed,” read the statement.

Previously, Mahathir was education minister from 1974 to 1977.

The education minister’s post has been vacant since former minister Maszlee Malik resigned abruptly on January 2 during a press conference at his ministry, citing advice from Mahathir. He held the post for 20 months.
