Inaccurate social media info affects Melaka Tourism — state executive councillor

MELAKA, Oct 7 — Inaccurate information on social media related to Covid-19 in Melaka last week was among the main reasons affecting the state’s tourism.

State Tourism, Heritage and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Muhammad Jailani Khamis said the irresponsible action had indirectly caused panic among locals and domestic tourists visiting Melaka.

He said the situation was affecting the income of the state and the people which was largely contributed by the tourism sector.

“Yes, I admit that the number of tourist arrivals last week was slightly affected but it was not due to the increase in Covid-19 positive cases which reached three figures (nationwide). Melaka has only a few cases.

“The news which went viral was an unnecessary problem involving an assemblyman who returned from Sabah and linked to sanitation activities carried out in Seri Negeri,” he told reporters after launching the ‘October 2020 Frontliners and Your Family is Appreciated’ promotion aboard the Kapal Mendam Berahi here, last night.

Commenting further, Muhamad Jailani said the state government always ensures that cleaning and decontamination process was carried out regularly at all tourist destinations and hotspots in the state to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

“So tourists do not have to worry about holidaying in Melaka and we guarantee the safety and cleanliness of the state’s tourist destinations and products. We hope the people comply with all the stipulated standard operating procedures,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said a 50 per cent discount on ticket prices on the Melaka River Cruise (MRC) was given to frontline staff and five members of their families throughout October.

The promotion involves admission for adults which is RM12.50 (original price RM25) and children RM7.50 (original price RM15).

A 50 per cent discount is also given for boat rentals involving 25 passengers at a discounted price of RM500 for MRC boats, Kapal Mendam Berahi (RM750) and Mawar boats which can accommodate 14 passengers (RM600).

“These promotions are in appreciation of frontline staff for their sacrifices and continuous hard work in the fight against Covid-19 as well as to attract more visitors aboard the MRC boats,” he said.

Earlier, at the event 60 personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department from all over the country except Sabah sailed the Melaka River onboard a MRC boat.
