Second phase of post-flood cleanup to complete in two months

By Zareef Muzammil

PETALING JAYA, Feb 9 — The second phase of the post-flood cleanup operations in Taman Sri Muda, Seksyen 25, Shah Alam, is expected to conclude within two months.

KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEBWM) managing director Ramli Mohd Tahir said work clearing out clogged drains and ditches are taking a bit more time due to the large area involved.

“Gotong-royong activities will be continued in the residential areas to clear out the drains and ditches which are clogged up with muds, sands and gravel stones.

“Once we removed it, the water can flow freely. So we hoped to be able to complete the work in a month and a half or two months,” he said.

He said this at the handover ceremony for school supplies at Tabung Haji Hotel in Kelana Jaya here yesterday, also present was Seri Setia state assemblyman Halimey Abu Bakar.

Ramli also urged communities in the area to avoid throwing bulk waste into the drains as it might affect their second phase cleanup operations.

“After the Chinese New Year celebration, there is still bulk waster such as cabinets dumped near the drains. Maybe they just threw it away because they have already replaced it with a new cabinet.

“So if we only focus on the removal of post-flood waste, it would slow down the current phase of the cleanup. Residents need to be responsible as we do not want this area to become a bulk waste dumping ground,” he said.

KDEBWM, a subsidiary company of the state government that fully-manages domestic waste collection, has been endeavouring to clear flood-affected areas since December 20 last year in stages.

Approximately 78,000 metric tonnes of bulk waste have been cleared, with cooperation from the local authorities and other agencies, which fully concluded on January 7.

Starting on January 8, the company has been carrying out the second phase of the cleanup operations, focusing on decontamination and clearing out clogged drains and ditches, using effective microbiology technology.
