PKR polls: Selangor MB to contest for vice-presidency

By Nasuha Badrul Huzaini

SHAH ALAM, April 11 — Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari will contest the vice-president post in the upcoming PKR polls.

The Selangor Menteri Besar said the decision to run for the position was made following lengthy discussions with several parties, including the state leaders and central leadership from other states.

“After discussing with them, we have concluded that we are confident that we will win and thus would be able to help contribute more in strengthening the party in Selangor. This has led me to officially announce my nomination for the position.

“The selection process this year is crucial for PKR’s future as it will determine the party’s direction during the upcoming general election,” he said at a press conference held at the Menteri Besar Official Residence here, today.

Amirudin was supported by PKR vice-president Tian Chua, who had recently announced that he would not be defending the position, and Kuala Selangor division chief Juwairiya Zulkifli.

As of 4pm today, Amirudin said 16 candidates are vying for the four vice-presidency posts.

This includes PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Aminuddin Harun, Fuziah Salleh and Azan Ismail.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said that the party’s election is the right track to strategise for the 15th general polls.

“The PKR polls would unite and strengthen the party despite facing several unwanted events before this. We hope the election would be able to produce a clean result,” said the Sungai Tua state assemblyman.

Prior to his venture into politics, Amirudin worked as an officer at the PKR headquarters for a year in 2003. In 2004, he was appointed as a member of the PKR’s youth wing, Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK).

In 2007, he joined the AMK leadership and was appointed to the Central Leadership Council from 2008/2009 until present.

When asked about contesting against former Perak PKR chairman Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak for the Gombak Branch chief post, Amirudin said it is part of the party’s democratic system.

“Everyone has the opportunity to show their leadership talent. Let the democratic process run smoothly,” he added.

Nominations for the 222 PKR elections started from Friday until yesterday, while nominations for the Central Leadership Council (MPP) were held today. The registration is open until midnight.

The party elections for the 2022-2025 term will take place from May 13-18.
