SHAH ALAM, Aug 24 — The Selangor government plans to utilise 98 ponds and lakes throughout the state by establishing a connecting system to manage floodwater.
State executive councillor for infrastructure Izham Hashim said the Selangor Water Management Board (Luas) has authorised the initial stage of the connecting work to the network system for 21 ponds.
“There are 98 ponds and lakes in total, which we will gradually connect to the river system and use to manage floodwater as well as during droughts.
“In the event of a severe downpour, the pool will prevent rainwater from entering the river and will be available for use in the event of a drought,” he said at a press conference on the state government’s planning to overcome the flood issues, at the Selangor State Secretariat Building, here yesterday.
According to Izham, the combined capacity of all the ponds is 34 million cubic metres, which is sufficient to meet the demand in the event of a drought.
“These pools alone could supply up to 2,000 million liters of water per day for a period of one month. This does not include existing dams.
“The 98 ponds and lakes are new, meaning they have existed for a long period but have never been utilised,” he said.
