MYTV to introduce mobile tv service

KUCHING, Aug 20 — The digital terrestrial television (DTT) platform provider company, MYTV Broadcasting Sdn Bhd, will launch a free mobile television service later this year that can be accessed via smartphones and car television systems.

MYTV vice-president (Broadcasting Operations) Azman Fitton said the initiative resulted from cooperation with its partner, ACOTech, which developed the infotainment unit software, to expand its service further and not be limited to televisions at home.

“In addition to smartphones, this mobile tv service will be available in all Proton vehicles (with car television) and we hope that it will penetrate the market of other car brands over time.

“We want more people to know MYTV and attract young viewers because they tend to watch programmes through mobile phones. The launching will be in December,” he told Bernama after a visit to the Gunung Serapi transmitter station here today.

He also said that for a start, MYTV is targeting 20,000 viewers for the pre-launch of the streaming platform or over-the-top (OTT) service, which will take place this October.

Elaborating, Azman said the content of the mobile service is different from the existing MYTV broadcasts that can be watched at home as it focuses on shows that are not aired in the mainstream media.

“For example, we will broadcast for free sports programmes that cannot be watched on regular television, and users may have to pay a small fee to watch premium programmes,” he said.

Also present during the visit were Broadcasting Department deputy director-general (Broadcasting Operations) Putri Joliana Yaacob and Head of TV, Bernama Broadcasting Department Nor Hamzeela Md Hambali.

According to Azman, Gunung Serapi station is one of the 12 transmitter sites in Sarawak and 44 sites across the country. The transmitter covers the areas of Kuching, Lundu, Asajaya and Bau.

In the meantime, Putri Joliana said MYTV would build two transmitter stations, one each in Perlis and Negeri Sembilan, to expand the coverage of DTT to the people of the respective states.

The stations in TM Exchange, Perlis and Gunung Telapak Burok, Negeri Sembilan will start operating on December 1.
