SHAH ALAM, March 30 — The Sultan of Selangor’s Cup (TSSC) 2024 in August will see the tournament open a new chapter for the country’s historic Stadium Merdeka.
TSSC chairman and team manager Tan Sri Abd Karim Munisar said the tournament will be the first event after reopening.
The Cup has not been organised since 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“This also sparked ideas from all walks of life about the image of the Stadium Merdeka itself as holding the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup on August 17 will be history itself.
“It is a good marketing for the stadium as well. We also encourage the use of public transport because a lot of construction is being done at Stadium Merdeka. Prasarana Malaysia Bhd also agreed to extend the operation hours until 12am on that day,” he said.
Abd Karim was speaking to the press at the TSSC Committee’s Meeting and fast-breaking event yesterday which was also attended by Raja Muda Selangor Tengku Amir Shah.
Stadium Merdeka, a national historical landmark, was previously closed for restoration in 2016.
The process is expected to be completed in April or May, and its progress is monitored by Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) as the stadium’s management.
Stadium Merdeka was considered an engineering marvel of the Federation of Malaya when it was first built in 1956 and completed within a year.
It hosted the country’s proud historic moment when the nation’s first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj declared Malaya’s independence on August 31, 1957.
In addition organising the Selangor Sultan’s Cup, the tournament, which has been organised since 2001, has become a friendly match arena for the two traditional foes of the Malaysian Semi Pro League in Selangor, and Singapore.
