SHAH ALAM, May 14 — The Selangor Water Management Authority’s (Luas) prevented a spill from a palm oil tanker from contaminating the water source after the vehicle was involved in an accident along the Karak Expressway, Kuala Lumpur-bound, yesterday.

State executive councillor for public health and environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said she received information from the highway concessionaire, ANIH Bhd, about the incident on Km36.8 of the expressway.

She said the accident occurred near the Sungai Gombak water source, which supplies raw water to the Gombak treatment plant (LRA) 8.8km away and the Wangsa Maju LRA 17.2km away.

“The accident caused the palm oil from the vehicle to spill in the drain near the expressway.

“Luas immediately contacted ANIH Bhd to control the spill, and so clean-up could be done speedily as it carried the risk of polluting the nearby water source,” she said in a statement today.

Jamaliah said ANIH Bhd managed to control the oil spill by blocking the drain flow.

Luas’ checks revealed there were no traces of the spill in the nearby river, and clean-up was done by the tanker driver with cooperation from ANIH Bhd and police personnel.

“Luas was monitoring the clean-up until 2.30am today. There were no reported issues during the operation.

“The state government and Luas want to express their appreciation to ANIH Bhd and all parties involved for successfully controlling the risk of pollution to the state’s water source,” Jamaliah said.
