PKNS Selangor Masters challenge heats up as Galven, Ervin enter the fray

PETALING JAYA, May 30 — Next month’s PKNS Selangor Masters 2024 is set to be an exciting affair now that national golfers Galven Green and Ervin Chang have confirmed their participation in the tournament.

With defending champion Ho Yu Cheng of Taiwan and another national golfer, Shahriffudin Ariffin, who won the 2022 edition, also in the fray, the US$175,000 (about RM823,725) tournament is set to come alive at Kelab Golf Seri Selangor from June 19 to June 22.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the tournament, jointly sanctioned by the Asian Development Tour (ADT) and the domestic Toyota Tour, would see the top 10 golfers at the end of the year earning the coveted Asian Tour cards for 2025.

For the record, only two Malaysians have won the Selangor Masters, namely Ben Leong in 2008 and Shahriffudin in 2022, when Seri Selangor was the venue.

Hopes will be high for Chang to be in the title hunt at Seri Selangor as he once ended Malaysia’s 21-year SEA Games medal drought by clinching a surprise gold medal in the individual event at the 2021 edition in Hanoi.

Meanwhile, Kelab Golf Seri Selangor is also set to host the Selangor International Junior Golf Championship from June 13 to June 15. Over 100 participants aged between 12 and 18 from across the region will compete in individual and team events in the boys’ and girls’ divisions.

“Through the Selangor International Junior Golf Championship, we provide a platform for our own young talents to test themselves against some of the best juniors from across the region.

“… The state government will sponsor the best player from Selangor in the junior tournament to study at the UUM International School Melaka,” said Amirudin.

The Selangor International Junior Golf Championship is also expected to feature golfers from South Korea, China, India, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, Bangladesh, Taiwan, and the United Arab Emirates.
