Body of Malaysian hiker who died on Alaskan mountain arrives home

GEORGE TOWN, June 15 — The body of Malaysian climber Zulkifli Yusof, 37, who died during an expedition to Mount Denali in Alaska, the United States, arrived home this morning.

The Korean Airlines cargo flight KE373 carrying Zulkifli’s body landed at the Penang International Airport here at 8.42am.

His remains were flown home at 7.15am Wednesday (local time) with transit flights in Los Angeles and Incheon.

A hearse was seen entering the Bayan Lepas Air Cargo Complex at 8.37am. It departed at 10am to transport the body to Taiping, Perak, for burial.

Accompanying Zulkifli on his final journey were his father Yusof Abdullah, two of his siblings, relatives, and representatives of the Alpine Club Malaysia (ACM).

The body will be taken to the family home in Kampung Temerlok, Terong, and funeral prayers will be held at Al Mahmudiah Mosque. Burial is expected after Zohor.

ACM previously said the repatriation of the body was carried out with an insurance company, funeral management agents, the Malaysian Consulate General in Los Angeles, and ACM representatives.

On June 1, ACM announced that Zulkifli, one of three Malaysian climbers stranded on Mount Denali since May 28, died on May 29 while sheltering in a snow cave.
