MBSA receives global award for climate change efforts

SHAH ALAM, June 28 — The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has been recognised for efforts to address climate change, earning it two awards in a recent ceremony.

In a Facebook post, the local council said it was awarded with the Mitigation Badge and Adaptation Badge by the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCOM), the largest global alliance for city climate leadership.

The announcement was made during the GCOM 2023 Badge Awarding Ceremony for its Southeast Asian signatories, held on June 12 and 13 in Bangkok, Thailand.

“MBSA was chosen to receive the badges for its efforts in taking action to adapt to global climate change,” it said today.

According to GCOM’s website, badges are organised around three main pillars — mitigation, adaptation and access to energy, capturing signatory progress across the different phases and milestones in each pillar.

A city earns a badge when the information reported meets the requirements for a corresponding phase.

GCOM was established in 2017 as a powerful response to climate change from cities around the world.

It is the largest global alliance for city climate leadership, built upon the commitment of over 12,500 cities and local governments from 144 countries across six continents.

In total, they represent more than one billion people.

“With climate mitigation targets that are projected to reduce global emissions by 4.1 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2050, equivalent to 80 per cent of the United States’ yearly emissions, GCOM cities are demonstrating they are already taking action,” it said.

MBSA has taken significant steps to reduce carbon emissions over the years.

In 2021, the local council received 16 diamond recognition and provisional certification awards at the Low Carbon City 2030 Challenge ceremony held in Putrajaya.
