MOE looks to prevent teachers from retiring early

NIBONG TEBAL, June 27 — The Education Ministry (MOE) has taken various approaches to boost teachers’ motivation and reduce the early retirement rate.

“We create various mechanisms to boost their spirits… as well as management related to promotion.

“But I think those who want to retire early choose to do so due to health issues, no interest (to continue teaching) and family matters,” she told reporters when met after surveying the Sungai Duri night market here today.

Also present was Pakatan Harapan’s Sungai Bakap by-election candidate Joohari Ariffin.

Fadhlina however is confident that teachers’ early retirement will not affect the country’s education system as it is a “come and go” issue.

She said 98 per cent of vacancies nationwide have been filled thanks to close cooperation with the Education Service Commission.

“God willing, we have several approaches, namely, graduate teachers from teacher education institutes, then we have contract of service appointments that we take from time to time according to our needs,” she said.

Earlier, Fadhlina in a written reply at the Dewan Rakyat today said the main cause cited by teachers who have retired early in the past three years was lack of interest in their career.

She said that was the response of 72.36 per cent of the 4,300 to 6,300 teachers who retired early in that period.
