Nearly 160,000 SPM grads offered places in public varsities

PUTRAJAYA, June 28 — A total of 159,027 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2023 graduates have been offered placements at public higher learning institutions (IPTAs).

The Higher Education Ministry said of the total, 83,667 were offered places at public universities; 43,531 at polytechnics; 26,474 at community colleges; and 5,355 at public skills training Institutions.

The ministry said in a statement today it received 214,173 applications this year from eligible SPM graduates students via UPUOnline.

It said 16,593 students were also offered places under the special pathway — 15,082 for those in the B40 category, 425 students with disabilities, 732 athletes, and 354 Orang Asli.

“Thirty-one candidates from Social Welfare Department institutions have received offers. Overall, 504 study programmes are offered this session: 104 certificate, 53 foundation, 346 diploma, and one bachelor’s programmes,” it said.

The ministry said admission to these institutions is based on meritocracy, by ranking all eligible candidates from their highest to the lowest merit scores.

It said unsuccessful students can submit their appeals via UPUOnline within 10 days from today until 5pm on July 7.
