Over 40,000 objections over MPS assessment tax hike received, hearing starts July

By Fitri Hazim Hazam

GOMBAK, June 27 — The Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) has received approximately 44,029 objections over its new assessment tax rates as of May 31, said its president Shahman Jalaludin.

As such, the council will hold objection hearings in phases over a two-month period, from July 1 to August 30.

“Since yesterday, MPS has been sending notification of the hearings in phases via email and SMS to all objectors.

“This only involves objections received by May 31. Objections after that period, totalling 1,712, have been rejected for hearing,” he said after chairing a meeting at Menara MPS yesterday.

Shahman added that the notice of the new valuation list for assessment taxes was issued under Section 141 of the Local Government Act 1976 to all property owners within MPS’ administrative areas.

“This notice serves as an announcement of the reassessment of the assessment tax after 32 years of MPS using the 1992 valuation ‘tone of list’.

“The reassessment will use the current year’s valuation, and the existing assessment tax rate will be lowered to balance a reasonable valuation,” he said.

Those with further inquiries may contact the MPS Valuation and Property Management Department at 03-6126 5905/5906/5907.

Besides MPS, seven other local councils have not reviewed tax rates for between 20 to 40 years.

This includes the Kajang Municipal Council, which has not reviewed rates for 39 years since 1985, and the Kuala Langat Municipal Council for 37 years since 1987.

For the Subang Jaya City Council, it has not raised assessment taxes for 32 years since 1992 for the Subang Jaya and Bandar Sunway areas, and for 28 years since 1996 for the USJ, Puchong, Seri Kembangan, and Serdang areas.

The Ampang Jaya Municipal Council and the Kuala Selangor Municipal Council have not increased taxes for 27 years since 1997, while the Hulu Selangor Municipal Council has not done so for 28 years since 1986.

Similarly, the Shah Alam City Council has not imposed any assessment tax increases for 18 years since 2006.

On May 30, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the new valuation process carried out by the local authorities is important to ensure urban planning effectiveness.
