Selangor top Asean destination for Chinese tourists

SHAH ALAM, June 6 — Selangor recorded a significant rise in tourists from China last year, outperforming other Southeast Asian countries, according to data from Tourism Selangor.

It is the third consecutive year the state has seen an increase in arrivals from the republic.

In a statement, the agency said 352,001 Chinese tourists visited Selangor last year — a 73 per cent increase from the 203,615 visitors it recorded in 2022.

To boost the number of Chinese tourists, a delegation from Tourism Selangor, led by state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim, embarked on a sales mission to Xiamen from May 24 to 26.

The delegation attended the 19th Strait Travel Fair and the 9th China (Xiamen) International Leisure Tourism Expo 2024.

Ng said the mission provided a platform for tourism operators from Selangor to showcase their offerings and tap into China’s vast market.

“As we gear up for Visit Selangor Year 2025, our second visit to China this year solidifies our collaboration with (international travel agent) Acmar Marketing, through the signing of a memorandum of understanding.

“This partnership is expected to pave the way for cross-promotional initiatives including familiarisation trips, content promotion and business-to-business programme opportunities,” he said in the statement.

Among the key attractions promoted by Tourism Selangor during its mission to China were popular theme parks such as Sunway Lagoon, SplashMania and FunPark @ Gamuda Luge Garden.

The state agency said it showcased several other attractions including Sky Mirror and Sekinchan to prospective buyers and travel agents in China to attract those interested in ecotourism and agrotourism.

In line with Selangor’s tourism campaign theme “Splendid Selangor, Take Me Anywhere!”, Tourism Selangor said the state welcomes collaborations with international agencies and travel agents to enhance business opportunities, especially in the lead-up to Visit Selangor Year 2025.

The state targets seven million tourist arrivals for 2025.
