KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 — Global air cargo markets showed continuously strong annual growth in demand for June 2024, measured in cargo tonne-kilometres (CTKs), rising by 14.1 per cent as against the same month in 2023.
This is the seventh consecutive month of double-digit year-on-year (y-o-y) growth, said the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Meanwhile, capacity as measured in available CTKs (ACTKs) grew by 8.8 per cent compared to June 2023.
Total first half year of 2024 (1H 2024) demand increased by 13.4 per cent compared to 1H 2023.
IATA director-general Willie Walsh said strong growth across all regions and major trade lanes combined for a record-breaking 1H performance in terms of CTKs.
Maritime shipping constraints and a booming e-commerce sector are among the strongest growth drivers.
“Meanwhile, the sector has remained largely impervious to ongoing political and economic challenges and the United States customs crackdown on e-commerce deliveries from China.
“Air cargo looks to be on solid ground to continue its strong performance into the 2H 2024,” he said in a statement today.
By region, Asia-Pacific airlines saw 17.0 per cent y-o-y demand growth for air cargo in June, European carriers grew 16.1 per cent, Middle Eastern airlines registered 13.8 per cent, Latin American carriers posted 13.1 per cent, and African airlines saw 11.8 per cent growth.
North American carriers experienced an 9.5 per cent y-o-y cargo growth for June, the weakest among all regions.
