KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today announced a reward of RM10,000 for each player and coach of the national sepak takraw team, following their victory at the Sepak Takraw World Cup in May.
Anwar announced this during a meeting with the team following their historic double championship titles at the tournament.
“Heartiest congratulations and highest appreciation to the entire national sepak takraw team for bringing honour to the country and elevating the image and standard of (Malaysia’s) sepak takraw on the world stage,” he said in a Facebook post today.
Anwar said during the meeting, he also covered several issues, including the need for a national sepak takraw stadium, the status of sepak takraw as a non-core sport, opportunities for further education, career prospects and the welfare of sepak takraw athletes.
At the Sepak Takraw World Cup held at Titiwangsa Stadium here, the national sepak takraw squad made history by ending Thailand’s dominance, defeating them in the final of both the regu and double events with a score of 2-0.
However, the national sepak takraw squad’s 33-year wait to become champions in the team regu event continues, after losing to Thailand 1-2 in the final match.
