SUBANG JAYA, July 7 — Selangor is expected to achieve full 5G network coverage next year, said the state executive councillor for innovation Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah.

He said 5G coverage in the state has reached 96.1 per cent so far, with the construction of the network focused on areas with high economic activity.

“The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has set a target for Selangor to achieve full 5G coverage next year, and so far, there are 38 areas facing issues like dropped calls.

“Selangor is on the right track to meet the set target. Several aspects are being improved to enhance network coverage for the future,” Fahmi said.

He was speaking to the press during the Jualan Ehsan Rahman programme at Dewan D’Kelana’s car park in Kelana Jaya today.

Fahmi added that the state government is currently considering new opportunities to explore once Selangor achieves full 5G coverage next year.

“If coverage reaches full 5G, it will undoubtedly benefit the state government’s management and enable us to provide better services to the people.

“Therefore, we are reviewing industrial sites that have already obtained 5G, which can assure foreign investors, particularly in the automation and robotics sectors,” he said.

On July 3, Communications Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching said the 5G network coverage in Selangor’s populated areas had reached 96.1 per cent as of May 31.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, she said that Digital Nasional Berhad had completed 1,668 out of the 1,845 targeted 5G coverage sites in the state.

In addition to Selangor, 5G coverage in populated areas is 97.7 per cent in Kuala Lumpur, 97.3 per cent in Putrajaya, 83.9 per cent in Johor, 88.6 per cent in Melaka, 77.5 per cent in Negeri Sembilan, and 91.1 per cent in Penang.

Meanwhile, coverage is 79.8 per cent in Perak, 80.1 per cent in Kedah, 91.4 per cent in Perlis, 65.5 per cent in Pahang, 72.7 per cent in Terengganu, 66.4 per cent in Kelantan, 68.6 per cent in Sabah, 94.4 per cent in Labuan, and 62 per cent in Sarawak.
