Water supply recovery at 93.5 pct as at 12pm

KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 — Water supply in seven regions serviced by Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) is 93.5 per cent restored, the firm said today.

This is following an unscheduled water cut from Tuesday, after odour pollution was detected in Sungai Kundang and Sungai Sembah, which supply the Rantau Panjang and Sungai Selangor Phases 1, 2, and 3 water treatment plants (WTPs).

Most areas will experience full supply recovery at 8pm today, while complete recovery across all areas is expected at 8am tomorrow.

Air Selangor said the duration of supply disruption and recovery in affected areas will vary depending on the location of consumers’ premises and water pressure levels at each distribution system.

It said if consumers see discoloured tap water after supply has resumed, they should let the water run clear before using it for daily consumption. It advised those with restored supply to use the resource prudently to ensure the service in areas still affected can resume soon.

The water company said it has deployed tankers to affected areas, with priority to critical premises such as hospitals, clinics, dialysis centres and funeral services. Alternative water aid is also available at nine local service centres.

Commercial consumers can buy treated water at Air Selangor’s Sepang or Hulu Langat consumer service counters. Air Selangor said these consumers can fill their own tankers at two stations in Hulu Langat’s Braemar Estate and Sepang’s Taman Gemilang Dengkil.

The disruption was caused by effluence from an acrylic materials-processing factory in Rawang. A chemical leak from a storage tank entered drains and subsequently into Sungai Kundang, affecting several other rivers.

The resulting odour pollution caused the temporary suspension of the Rantau Panjang WTP and the Sungai Selangor Phases 1, 2, and 3 WTPs, as well as a water cut in seven regions in the Klang Valley.
