SHAH ALAM, Aug 26 — All relief centres in Selangor should be reassessed to ensure they are comfortable for disaster victims, said state executive councillor for women empowerment and welfare Anfaal Saari.
She said this is needed because some relief centres were found to have inadequate facilities, making them unsuitable for the elderly and persons with disabilities during disasters.
“During a previous flood in Kampung Merbau Sempak, Sungai Buloh, I discovered the relief centre there was in poor condition, with unusable toilets, forcing the elderly and disabled to use facilities on a higher floor and quite a distance away.
“I propose that the condition of all premises converted into relief centres be reassessed… It is crucial that the premises are in a state of readiness,” she told reporters after the second Independent Living Support Centre (ILSC) Graduation Ceremony here today.
She said this when asked to comment on the readiness of relief centres in Selangor for unforeseen disaster situations.
In another development, Anfaal said the state government is exploring the possibility of adding study courses to the ILSC programme based on industry needs.
She said the 57 disabled youth aged 18 to 25 from the state, who joined the training and skills programme at the centre, were chosen according to certain criteria.
Anfaal said the four courses available — bakery, barista, information technology, and hospitality — were made possible via collaboration with Cheshire Home, the Youth and Sports Ministry, and the National Youth Skills Institute.
