SHAH ALAM, Sept 6 — The state administration is looking to provide 6,000 affordable housing units under the Smart Rental Scheme by 2026 to help residents own their own homes.

State executive councillor for housing and culture Borhan Aman Shah said nearly 2,000 housing units have been placed under the scheme, which has received a positive public response due to the reasonable rental rates.

“This scheme enables participants to own their own homes, as 30 per cent of the rental payments will be used as a deposit for purchasing Rumah Idaman or Rumah Harapan after five years,” he said.

Borhan added that the scheme currently focuses on development areas or towns, including in the Gombak, Hulu Langat, Petaling Jaya, and Subang districts, before expanding to other areas.

The Smart Rental Scheme offers low- and middle-income groups the opportunity to own their own homes, with a maximum rental period of five years.

Thirty per cent of the net rental amount paid will be returned to the tenants when they no longer reside in the unit.

By 2025, the state government aims to build 60,000 housing units via the Rumah Selangorku 3.0 housing policy.
