CAIRO, Nov 11 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has proposed that any country that refuses to acknowledge resolutions made by the United Nations (UN) be expelled from the world body.
Without naming any country, but in reference to brutality against Palestinians in Gaza, Anwar said expulsion remains the only option for such nations.
“We are dealing with a complex situation because of the refusal of Israel to concede, even on humanitarian aid, to the extent that genocide (is happening) in Gaza.
“We have taken a very strong position on that, to protest strongly. In fact, I have promoted the idea that when a country refuses to acknowledge the rules and resolutions by the UN and the Security Council, the only option is to expel them.
“There is a position we must consider, but I understand how complex the situation is. Like you told me, Mr. President (Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi), the priority is, of course, a ceasefire.”
He made the remarks during a joint press conference with El-Sisi following their bilateral meeting at Al-Ittihadiya Palace, here, on Sunday.
Anwar paid a courtesy call to El-Sisi earlier as part of his four-day official visit to Egypt that began on Saturday.
He also conveyed the Malaysian people’s gratitude to Egypt for its support in facilitating Malaysia’s humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza.
Meanwhile, speaking at a public lecture at Al-Azhar University, Anwar expressed hope that the upcoming Arab-Islamic Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, would achieve consensus among Islamic nations on resolving the Palestine conflict.
“Tomorrow (Monday), an urgent meeting will be held with Islamic and Arab nations in Riyadh. Egyptian President El-Sisi and I will attend to discuss the latest developments in Gaza and Palestine.
“I would also like to express my deep gratitude to the President and government of Egypt for their remarkable support, enabling Malaysia to deliver humanitarian aid to the oppressed people of Gaza.
“And (thank you) for their assistance in sending two military planes to Rafah to evacuate Palestinian patients for treatment in Malaysian military hospitals,” he said.
On Nov 1, Anwar confirmed that he had received an invitation from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to attend a special summit in Riyadh.
Anwar said Malaysia had taken steps to convey its views to Arab nations, urging the removal of Israel as a UN member due to the atrocities committed by the regime.
He said this is the first time in modern history that such extreme humanitarian violations have occurred unchecked.
“The Israeli regime seems intent on wiping out the Palestinian people from Gaza and committing what is called genocide. Never in human history has one country violated all laws and regulations, killing children and women, committing atrocities by seizing land and colonising it.
“For this reason, Malaysia has made efforts to convey our views to our Arab and Islamic allies by promoting what is known as the Global South or the Alliance of Southern Countries to urge Israel’s expulsion from the UN.”
