Control order helps Selangor track foreign workers running small businesses

By Norrasyidah Arshad

SHAH ALAM, May 12 — The Selangor government takes the opportunity during the ongoing the movement control order (MCO) as well as the enhanced MCO (EMCO) to identify foreign workers running small businesses or trades in the state.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the issue was raised last year but enforcement efforts were restricted due to the shortage in the number of local enforcement officers as well as requiring the cooperation of all parties.

“We have a limited number of local enforcement officers between 200 to 300, 500 the most. We also need cooperation from all parties, such as border control by immigration and police surveillance and operations,” Amirudin told reporters when met after the Selangor Drug Prevention Association of Malaysia (Pemadam) Ramadan Sumbangan Kasih ceremony held at the Menteri Besar official residence here today.

Amirudin stressed that the state government had not approved businesses licenses to foreigners except for large companies.

He said, however, several third parties have issued the licenses and sold it to the foreign workers.

“We only approve the license for foreigners operating large companies, such as Panasonic, those that generate large-scale investments. Small businesses and traders are only restricted for locals,” he said.
