Azmin won’t defend Bukit Antarabangsa, knows voters will punish him — Amirudin

SHAH ALAM, July 10 — Selangor Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali’s rumoured decision not to defend his Bukit Antarabangsa seat in the upcoming state election stems out of fear that he would lose in the constituency.

This was the assessment made by his former protégé and current Selangor Pakatan Harapan (Harapan) chief Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, following last night’s statewide launch of Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s (Keadilan) election machinery.

“I was present at the Bukit Antarabangsa constituency to officiate its election operations centre and machinery,” he said in a Twitter post today.

“Congratulations to the team (there) because even before the war started, the traitor to the mandate of the Bukit Antarabangsa voters has fled.

“He (Azmin) knows the people of Bukit Antarabangsa will punish this traitor, just like the voters did in the Gombak (parliamentary seat) in the 15th General Election.”

Amirudin’s comment comes hot in the wake of speculations that Azmin, who was among the key conspirators behind the infamous Sheraton Move in 2020, would forgo his current state seat in search for a safer one.

This is despite the former Keadilan deputy president securing a landslide victory in the constituency in the last election in 2018, garnering an overwhelming 79.6 per cent of the overall votes cast then.

It is understood that there is fear within Azmin’s camp that the Bersatu man would not do well in mixed constituencies like Bukit Antarabangsa, which evenly comprises Malay and non-Malay voters.

The sentiment is that Azmin would be better accepted by voters in Malay-majority seats, with rumours rife that he might contest in his hometown of Hulu Kelang.

Meanwhile, Amirudin urged Harapan and Barisan Nasional machineries to give their best in ensuring victory in Selangor.

This, he said, is particularly vital to ensure the state remains stable, prosperous and successful under a united front.

“Reject agents of betrayal, disunity and deception,” he said in his post.
