MPKj mulls installing CCTVs in hotspots to overcome illegal dumpsite issue

KAJANG, July 27 — The Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) has identified nine active illegal dumpsites in areas under its jurisdiction.

Council President Najmuddin Jemain said immediate action will be taken to address the issue, including discussions with the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change.

“Some of the areas where illegal dumpsites were discovered include Sungai Serai and Bandar Mahkota Cheras. We are still receiving numerous complaints about irresponsible parties dumping waste in these areas, which is of great concern.

InsyaAllah, on Friday (July 28), there will be a meeting with the relevant ministry to discuss further how this problem can be resolved,” he said after the MPKj meeting at Menara MPKj yesterday.

To prevent such activities from continuing, Najmuddin said the council intends to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems at hotspots.

“One of the hotspots where we used CCTV is in Semungkis, where we managed to record the faces and vehicle registration numbers of the culprits, most of whom used motorcycles.

“We may also use the same modus operandi at other hotspots, and issue fines based on the vehicle registration numbers, in cooperation with the Road Transport Department,” he said.

Regular patrols by MPKj’s Department of Municipal and Health Services at these hotspots have also led to the apprehension and seizure of several lorries involved in illegal dumping.

“A total of 125 lorries have been seized since January until July 23, in addition to 17 fines issued for environmental pollution offences. This has resulted in an estimated total of RM687,500 in fines and seizures,” Najmuddin said.
