Special school for hardcore poor by next year — Fadhlina

ALOR SETAR, Aug 6 — The Education Ministry (MOE) will strive to establish a new type of school for students from hardcore poor families next year.

Its minister Fadhlina Sidek said efforts to provide quality education to underprivileged children in the country is part of her ministry’s agenda.

“We will ensure the establishment of this new type of school specifically for our poor children, God willing,” she told reporters after officiating the Schools in Hospitals (SDH) programme at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital here today.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Temu Anwar Bicara Pendidikan Madani programme in Penang Matriculation College said the government will introduce a new type of school for children in the poorest groups so they are not left behind.

Fadhlina said the special school will focus on improving the education level among children from poor families.

She also said there are 17 SDH operating in 11 states.

“We will expand (the SDH programme). I have discussed the matter with the Health Minister (Dr Zaliha Mustafa) … the issue now is space and we don’t want to disrupt hospital operations.

“It is very important to provide an environment conducive to learning for these children (undergoing treatment at hospitals),” she said.
