ORS supplies 1,300 MLD, can prevent contaminated supply

BY: NAZLI IBRAHIM
KUALA SELANGOR, NOV 18: The ‘Off River Storage’ or ORS method used at the Kolam Kampung Hang Tuah will be able to supply 1,300 million litres of water a day (MLD) to fulfil the requirement of consumers in Selangor, Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur.
Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) Acting Director Nor Zamri Sondor said the method can also prevent contaminated river water from overflowing into the seven ponds.
“In this year alone, we have used 33 pumps. We are using 2 pumps in this pond and 5 pumps at the Kolam Hang Tuah. There is one more and all these can produce 1,300 MLD.
“Today we have managed to set-up the ‘intake’ to allow excess water from Selangor River to flow and fill-up this pond as well as other connecting ponds.

“Through ORS, we can ensure that in the event of contamination, we can close the door to prevent the contaminated water from entering and ultimately guarantee a safer and cleaner water supply,” Nor Zamri said to SelangorKini during the Kampung Hang Tuah ORS Officiating Ceremony in Bestari Jaya.
He said, although ORS can supply 1,300 MLD but for the time being, water from Kolam Hang Tuah is pumped out at an optimum level of 800 MLD and being increased based on requirement.
According to him ORS also plays a role in reducing dependency on dam water especially during long draught season.
“During the dry season, we can then pump water from the ponds into the rivers and avoid fully depending on dams like we do now with the Selangor River and Tengi River dams. We had problems in 2014 for example when water level was low and it was difficult to supply enough water to meet requirements,” he added.
