SHAH ALAM, Nov 6 — The water pipe replacement works across Selangor, which covers 438 kilometres in total length, is expected to complete by the middle of next year, the state legislative assembly was told today.

Public Amenities, Agricultural Modernisation and Agro-based Industry Committee chairman Izham Hashim said a total 365.16 kilometres of pipe has been replaced since 2016, while the remaining 72.84 kilometres is still progress.

“In 2019, a total of 168 kilometres were identified and it is in the designing and tendering process.

“The total allocation for the pipe replacement programme from 2016 to 2019 had cost RM526 million,” he said in response to a question asked by Sungai Burong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Shamsudin Lias at the state legislative assembly here today.

Last month, Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari was reported to have said that the Selangor government had allocated a total RM324.3 million in grants and loans to assist in the implementation of replacing aged water pipes in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

The task was given to the sole license holder of water supply services in Selangor, Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor), which had spent RM1.1 billion between 2016 and 2018 to upgrade and repair various assets and water supply infrastructures.

Amirudin had also said this includes the replacement of 438 kilometres of water pipes and reducing the non-revenue water (NRW).

Meanwhile, Izham said the NRW was recorded at 28.67 per cent as of August this year.

He said the works in NRW reduction will continue, which would also involve the replacement of parts such as water pump valves, and areas facing high leakages will be given priority.

“We are taking the necessary steps to ensure the quality of water and reduction of NRW. Our target is the reduce the NRW by one per cent every year,” he said.
