Thailand records one new case, another death

BANGKOK, May 6 — Thailand has reported one new Covid-19 case and another death, bringing the tally to 2,989 cases and 55 fatalities since the outbreak began in January.

The latest fatality was a 69-year-old Australian hotel manager in the southern province of Phang-nga, said Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) spokesman Thaweesilp Wissanuyothin.

He said the man, who had lung infection and kidney complication, was pronounced dead yesterday.

The new case of infection was a 27-year-old woman who returned from Russia on May 3, he said at a daily Covid-19 briefing here today.

He said 12,847 Thais returned from abroad and underwent 14-day quarantine at state facilities from April 21 to yesterday.

“A total of 3,921 people have completed the 14-day quarantine and returned home while 85 of the returnees have tested positive for Covid-19,” he added.

He said 173 patients are being treated at hospitals and 2,761 cases have recovered and been discharged.

Thaweesilp also said the Department of Medical Science in Bangkok confirmed that 40 suspected cases of infection reported in the southern province of Yala on Monday were negative for Covid-19.

On Monday, Yala’s Governor Chaiyasit Panitpong said the 40 new cases were detected in four districts in Yala Province – Bannang Sata, Jaha, Raman and Mueng Yala – following active case finding.

However, samples taken for a second test the following day had turned out negative. The third tests were conducted at the Department of Medical Science in Bangkok for accuracy.

Meanwhile, Pattani Governor Kraisorn Visitwong said health authorities are conducting active case detection in a village of southern province Pattani after 22 villagers were infected with the deadly virus.

“A total of 1,500 villagers from To Chood will undergo Covid-19 test,” he said.

To date, Pattani has recorded 79 positive cases.
