New Covid-19 cases surpass 6,000 mark — Health DG

SHAH ALAM, May 19 — The daily Covid-19 cases in Malaysia surpassed the 6,000 mark for the first time today at 6,075, bringing the overall positive cases in the country to 485,496.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a post on Twitter said during the period, 2,251 cases were recorded in Selangor, followed by Johor (699) and Kuala Lumpur (660).

Kedah recorded 445 cases followed by Kelantan (441), Sarawak (323), Perak (220), Terengganu (203), Negeri Sembulan (189), Pulau Pinang (183), Sabah (160), Pahang (150), Melaka (122), Labuan (14), Putrajaya (9) and Perlis (6).

Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham in a media statement said that of the total new cases, only three were imported cases.

“The imported cases involved a citizen and two non-citizens, while the local cases involved 5,452 citizens and 620 non-citizens,” he said.

A total of 3,516 recoveries were recorded today, bringing the total to 436,116, while active cases stood at 47,340.

Dr Noor Hisham said the death toll due to the pandemic had risen to 2,040 after 46 deaths were reported over the past 24 hours.

He said 559 cases were currently in the intensive care unit with 303 of them requiring respiratory support.

The number of new clusters detected also hit a new record high today with 22 clusters, eight of which involved workplaces, community (seven), religious (six) and educational institution (one).

The workplace clusters are Industri Bukit Raja (Selangor), Jalan 223 PJ (Selangor), Jalan Endap Sawit (Sarawak), Jalan Tanjung Kupang (Johor), Jalan Tuan Hitam (Terengganu), Paya Rumput Utama (Melaka), Victorial Merdeka (Labuan) and Jalan Kampung Bakau (Perlis).

The community clusters are Stunggang (Sarawak), Kampung Tanjong Jejulok (Kelantan), Kampung Limau (Kuala Lumpur), Pagar Sungai Imam (Sabah), Muhibbah Dua (Sabah), Kolopis (Sabah) and Jalan Inang (Melaka).

The religious clusters are Jalan Kenanga Pertama (Selangor), Jalan Pusara (Selangor), Jalan Timah Empat (Johor), Taman Sri Rampai (Kuala Lumpur), Kampung Keranji (Kelantan) and Kampung Batu Tiga (Perak), while the educational institution cluster is Jalan Senduduk Satu (Johor).

“The new development brings the total number of clusters to 1,942 with 516 still being active,” he said, adding that 1,426 clusters had ended as of yesterday.
