Floods: Death toll stands at 24, over 22,000 victims displaced in Selangor — MB

SHAH ALAM, Dec 23 — Selangor has recorded 24 fatalities due to floods as of last night, says Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

In a statement today, Amirudin said a total of 22,875 flood victims from 5,165 families have been relocated to 125 temporary relief centres (PPS) in eight districts in Selangor as of 8pm last night.

“The state government conveys its condolences to the families of the victims concerned and we hope that they will be granted patience, strength and perseverance in facing this tragedy,” the statement read.

Amirudin said a total of 3,326 personnel, including non-governmental organisations (NGOs), are involved in flood relief operations as well as search and rescue (SAR) operations for flood victims.

Meanwhile, the Menteri Besar said as of 9pm last night, a total of 2,064 metric tonnes of waste were collected by the KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM).

“The cleanup efforts in eight districts affected by the floods involved 87 tong roll-on roll-off (RORO), 29 backhoes and 1,274 workers.

“This effort is actively carried out with the help of agencies and cooperation of volunteers,” he added.

Yesterday, Amirudin had chaired the Selangor Special Committee Meeting on Disaster Management together with the Civil Defence Force (APM), National Security Council (NSC), police, social welfare department (JKM), the Selangor Health Department (JKNS), Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), the Malaysian Meteorological Department, and other related agencies.

Amirudin said beginning this week, the meeting will be held be at least twice a week.

“I would like to also remind all members and agencies present during the meeting on the importance of togetherness and coordination as well as adherence to the chain of command so that aid, especially food, basic items and medicines, can be delivered efficiently to the localities in need,” said Amirudin.

Also present during the meeting was state Opposition leader Datuk Rizam Ismail, who was invited to share his ideas on facilitating flood management in helping the people of Selangor.
